In other words, if you take the 3-day training that includes the Intro course, you will have fulfilled steps #1 and #4 in the DONA certification process.

(2) Observe a series of Childbirth Preparation Classes for expectant parents. The class must be a minimum of 12 hours in length to fulfill this requirement. It is possible to fulfill a certification requirement here as well, provided that the class meets DONA requirements.

(3) Read one book from each of the four categories on the DONA Reading List. These books are available for you to borrow from the Center's Lending Library or available for purchase through the DONA Boutique. By reading these books, you are also on your way to fulfilling DONA's Birth Doula certification requirements.

WITH WOMEN:  Elective Cesarean Delivery -- What do women "really" want?

With Lisa Kane Low, PhD, CNM

Thursday, February 7, 7-9pm

The recent National Institutes of Health State of the Science conference on maternal request for cesarean delivery was held in March 2006 in response to a purported increased in women desiring an elective cesarean or surgical delivery. But what and who is driving this demand? Is there only one approach to understanding this issue of surgical vs. vaginal birth?  Taking an interdisciplinary approach, a review of the NIH statement will be provided and additional questions and scientific evidence will be offered that reframes the question of what is or is not driving women to ask for elective cesarean surgery instead of experiencing a vaginal birth. When advocates, doulas, midwives, nurses and health care providers listen to women and try to support their choices, in the case of elective cesarean delivery, there are multiple voices that are becoming part of the conversation.  This presentation draw on sociological, ethical, feminist, and medical perspectives on this latest challenge to women’s reproductive autonomy and its varied constructions during childbirth and will offer some alternatives to consider in promoting optimal birth experiences for childbearing women.

  • Identify the key findings from the NIH State of the Science Report on elective cesarean delivery.
  • List underlying assumptions for this report that should be reconsidered.
  • Describe additional research studies that add insight into the question of elective cesarean section and women's choices.
  • Discuss three alternative perspectives regarding the role of choice and autonomy related to childbirth in the US today.
