Learn how to provide great support to a loved one. In this hands-on class, participants will:

  • Understand the physical, emotional and psychological needs of the laboring mother, how her needs may change throughout the labor process, and what you can do to help at each stage.
  • Identify strategies for supporting the parents’ birth plan.
  • Practice a range of coping techniques for managing pain in labor.
  • Explore a variety of comfort measures for labor and practice massage techniques.
  • Use birth balls, rebozos (a multi-purpose long Mexican shawl), movement and adaptive positioning to support normal progress in labor (helpful even when an epidural is chosen).
  • Learn our top 10 tips for supporting a breastfeeding mother, promoting healing and easing postpartum adjustment.

Why this class?

We believe all birthing mothers deserve to be well supported — emotionally, physically and mentally — as they labor to bring forth new life. Whether you are a friend, sister or grandma-to-be, we can help you gain confidence and skills in your support role. We have extracted our favorite support tips and techniques taught in our birth doula workshops and created a fun, interactive, one-day class just for you.

This guide explains the role of a birth companion, lists things to consider before inviting someone to your birth, contrasts the role of the companion with that of a partner or a doula, and details factors to consider before agreeing to be a birth companion.

To prepare for the Birth Companion Workshop …

Birth Companion WorkshopAre you unfamiliar with the birth process or need a refresher? To ensure that you are up to speed with the basics and have a solid framework for integrating the support techniques, we have the following recommendations:

How does the Birth Companion Workshop differ from the Birth Doula Workshop?

  1. This workshop is specially designed for folks who have been invited to attend the birth of a loved one and would like to be as supportive as possible.
  2. The one-day class extracts the elements of our three-day professional doula training that are most relevant to providing compassionate and effective, in-the-moment, hands-on labor support.
  3. The class cannot be used as fulfillment of certification requirements for birth doulas through DONA International. If, at some point in the future, you want to become a professional doula, you would need to register for the full three-day training.
  4. Click here for a complete list of topics covered in the DONA Birth Doula Workshop. Note that in our Birth Companion Workshop, we have eliminated topics related to the role of the professional birth doula and how to run a doula business.
