Fruit Smoothies

Whole Family Recipes—For the Childbearing Year & Beyond

Each Friday, I will share a recipe from our community cookbook. Contributors include doulas, midwives, moms, dads, and other supporters of the Center.

Smoothies make a quick, nutritious breakfast or snack food for hungry pregnant women. The protein powder gives an added boost and is good way to get the extra grams of protein needed during pregnancy. For women expecting multiples, protein smoothies can serve as a really concentrated food source. (Read labels and purchase a good quality supplement that is free of artificial ingredients, sweeteners, etc.) In the course of many a long labor at home, I have mixed smoothies for women who needed an energy lift. Kids love “strawberry shake” smoothies. Bananas that are getting ripe beyond your preference can be cut in half and frozen for use later in this recipe. The variations are endless, so play a little.

½ cup of yogurt (plain or vanilla)
3 tablespoons soy protein powder (optional)
banana or fresh or frozen fruit of your choice
2 ice cubes, if using fresh fruit
dash of whole milk
1 tablespoon raw honey (optional)

Put all ingredients together in a blender and blend until well combined. If using ice cubes, they will make a racket at first. Adjust ingredients for a taste and consistency that appeals to you. Drink soon after mixing (does not keep well).
