Doula Business Advisor: The Entrepreneurial Mindset
Are doulas entrepreneurs?
Entrepreneur = a person who organizes and manages any enterprise, especially a business, usually with considerable initiative and risk.
Are doulas entrepreneurs? My answer is, you are if you think you are. If you are a volunteer doula, a student doula, a hobbyist, a “birth junkie,” or employed by a hospital or agency, then no, you are not an entrepreneur. However, if you are trying to support yourself and/or a family with doula work (this is possible!), then you are an entrepreneur. Once you begin thinking of yourself as an entrepreneur, your approach to your work changes. You perceive yourself as a professional, as someone who is in business.
Entrepreneurs do what they do because they enjoy being captain of their own ships. Typically they are engaged in doing work they love. All small business owners understand, however, that they MUST devote some time to working ON their business, not merely work IN their business. To use the captain metaphor, the business owner must plot the course and oversee every aspect of the journey, in addition to steering the ship. Be sure and set aside some time each week to work ON your business. What do you do to develop your doula business?
The Doula Business Advisor blog is designed to support the establishment and long-term sustainability of private doula businesses.
