Childbirth Educator Position
Job Description
Teach community-based, consumer-oriented childbirth preparation classes for groups of up to eleven couples at the Center. Classes are offered on seven consecutive Tuesday or Wednesday evenings from 6:30–8:45pm or three consecutive Saturdays from 9:30am–1pm. Instructor arrives 1/2 hour prior to class start time and can expect to stay approximately 15 minutes after class ends, so the gig is from 6-9pm (or so) on weeknights and from 9am-1:15pm on Saturdays. Starting pay is based on experience and skill level and includes one hour of prep time for each class. All instructors are contract workers rather than employees of the Center.
The ideal candidate meets the following qualifications:
- Very knowledgeable about current labor and birth practices
- Hands-on experience with birth
- Committed to the Center’s values; read more here
- Able to walk a respectful line regarding parents’ choices; flexible, non-rigid approach
- Able to handle a diverse group of expectant parents, including medical professionals
- Dynamic public speaking skills, sense of humor
- Knowledgeable about differences between homebirth practices and routine hospital birth practices
- Have had a child(ren)
- Experienced educator with an understanding of the needs of adult learners
- Bachelor’s degree
- Certified as a childbirth educator or working towards certification
In addition:
Willing to commit to our training process which involves observing an entire seven-week series of classes and then co-teaching a series, before taking on a series on your own. There is no pay during the training period. There is no guarantee that we will hire you once the training period has completed. There is no guarantee regarding the number of hours you will be working once you start, but it may be up to half of the scheduled classes each year. We ask that you also be willing to commit to providing backup as needed.
