Change in the Center’s Non-Profit Status

Significant changes and exciting developments are underway at CCY. As is the case for so many local non-profits this past year, the Center found itself struggling to make ends meet at the close of 2007. The Board of Directors and senior staff were faced with some difficult decisions. A pathway that allowed our excellent educational and service programs to continue under a different infrastructure emerged.

As of January 1st, the Center for the Childbearing Year is no longer operating as a 501c3 non-profit corporation. The 501c3 tax-exempt status has been transferred to the Doulas Care program, which has become its own non-profit organization that will continue to be grant and donor supported. CCY will go forward as a for-profit business. Patty Brennan will continue as the Director of CCY and Lisa Kane Low has taken over as the volunteer Executive Director of Doulas Care. Both CCY and Doulas Care will stay in their current location and intend to continue to collaborate to deliver programs and services without interruption. We trust that this organizational separation, while representing a major shift for us, will be more or less invisible to you, our customers and supporters.

We believe that this solution will enhance the ability of both organizations to offer our vital programs in the community for years to come. Going forward, every dollar that you so generously donate to Doulas Care will directly fund efforts to provide a doula to every family who wants one, regardless of ability to pay.

As a for-profit business, CCY will be positioned to respond quickly to changes in the market place, as well as build new business partnerships that focus on promoting healthy families. Both organizations will continue to provide the programs they are known for, while advancing our shared mission of meeting the educational and social support needs of childbearing women and their families.
