Professional Doula Certification
Patty Brennan is an approved trainer through DONA International. All birth and postpartum doula trainings, as well as the Introduction to Childbirth for Doulas and Professional Education in Breastfeeding classes, fulfill certification requirements.
To learn more about the certification process, go to the DONA website. There is a separate process for birth doulas and postpartum doulas and additional fees (beyond training costs) involved. Certification requirements will be discussed in detail during your doula training. I recommend that you wait until after your training to purchase the certification packet and membership from DONA.
Is Certification Required?
No, doula certification is optional. Certification is not required in any state in order to practice as a doula. Certification represents the doula’s desire to professionalize her services. It may increase consumer confidence and enhance the ability of doulas to qualify for insurance reimbursement for their services.
