Michigan Coalition for Doula Access

Mission

The Michigan Coalition for Doula Access (MCDA), in an effort to improve birth outcomes while reducing the cost of maternity care, is pursuing public and private third party payment for doulas, so that all childbearing women in Michigan can obtain access to doula services. We intend for Michigan to become the third state in the country to offer Medicaid reimbursement for doula services.

Short-Term Goals

  1. Research the efforts made by others towards this purpose, most notably in Oregon and Minnesota where efforts to gain Medicaid reimbursement for doulas have been successful, but also in New York where a legislative effort failed.
  2. Identify key partners in Michigan who can help create a strategic plan for success.
  3. Build the membership of MCDA.
