Birth & Parenting News: UA bans herbal remedies
Here is an interesting juxtaposition of recent new items.
- Researchers report widespread use of medications among pregnant women.
- Vitamin D supplements for pregnant women may help prevent a respiratory disease called RSV that can lead to pneumonia and other potentially life-threatening illnesses in newborns, Dutch researchers report.
- Consuming omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil capsules during pregnancy may reduce a woman’s risk of postpartum depression, according to a new study.
And this …
- New European Union rules have come into force banning hundreds of traditional herbal remedies. The EU law allegedly aims to protect consumers from possible damaging side-effects of over-the-counter herbal medicines. For the first time, new regulations will allow only long-established and quality-controlled medicines to be sold. But both herbal remedy practitioners and manufacturers fear they could be forced out of business.
All for our own good? What supplements might be included in similar legislation? Is the U.S. heading in the same direction? (Yes! if Big Pharma has its way). I am reminded of an old saying: “The price of freedom is Vigilance.”
